The solar plane project was founded by Swiss pilot Bertrand Piccard, and pilot Andre Borschberg. Solar Impulse is an aircraft with the wingspan of a jumbo jet and a weight similar to a small car. It made its first intercontinental flight from Spain to Morocco June 2012. Piccard and Borschberg will attempt the first crossing of the United States by a solar-powered plane early May 2013. This is part of final preparations for an attempt in 2015 at the first round-the-world flight without any fuel. The project is backed by Swiss lift maker Schindler, and Belgian chemicals research group Solvay who want to test new materials and technologies while also gaining brand recognition. Reported by Reuters
