By travelwriter

On Sunday 14 April 2013 operations by motorboats were banned from operating between 10 AM and 3 PM, it was reported by Michael Day. The purpose of this first ban on the motorboats in Venice was to curtail the huge volume of water traffic that is causing the lagoon city to erode. Organisers want to highlight the need for more sustainable forms of transport in Venice’s celebrated waterways. Conservationists say that two-stroke marine engines are a particular problem. The acid nature of the pollution is thought to be speeding up the erosion of the city’s medieval buildings. Venice is already sinking into the lagoon. Huge numbers of vessels passing through the major canals are causing currents which is exacerbating this process. (Photo: independent.co.uk)
