Viking Ocean Cruises has officially started construction on its first ship. The Fincantieri shipyard in Marghera, Italy, held a ceremony June 6 as the first plates of steel was cut for the Viking Star, the first of two cruise ships for the new ocean-going line. Viking Founder and CEO Torstein Hagen attended the ceremony along with Fincantieri executives.
The 47,800-ton, 944-passenger Viking Star is scheduled for in May 2015. The second ship is scheduled for delivery in 2016, and Fincantieri and Viking are finalizing contracts for the two additional passenger vessels with an option for two more.
